Searching? - Where to look
Do you need some information but don’t know where to look? Here are some great websites that I have used? Find something fast – http://google.com - Google is the #1 general information search engine – great for most searches. Narrow your search - http://soople.com - If you haven’t check out Google’s first cousin, Soople, try it! You can narrow down searches – search for a specific item in variety of ways. Very Cool - my favorite! Use a directory to do a topic search - http://dir.yahoo.com/ - Yahoo is a directory – different than a search engine like Google or Alta Vista. Click on this link to read about how directories work. http://www.marshalladulteducation.org/techtips/techtip36.htm Have a specific question to ask - http://www.ask.com/ - They are getting better and better (they currently rank 5th in the search engine market share). Look up a spelling or use a Thesaurus - http://m-w.com/ - The Merriam Webster dictionary is quick and easy. Search general-interest subjects - http://home.about.com/index.htm - Browse the various subjects or search for one. Biographies - http://www.infoplease.com/people.html - over 30,000 biographies here Need Government information - http://firstgov.gov/ - the US government’s official website. Want a quick summary of the day's news - http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/nlp/newsblaster/index.html - maintained by Columbia University – great site! Want more complete news - http://dailynews.yahoo.com/ and http://news.google.com/ Want local news - http://www.topix.net/ - Just type in a zip code and read the latest local news. Like to read Op/Eds (opinions/editorials) - http://www.headlinespot.com/opinion/oped/ - from all over the country Need an encyclopedia, try - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page - about a half a millions articles. Here’s an on-line library - http://www.alllearn.org/er/ - Universities of Oxford, Stanford and Yale Search for classroom clipart - http://classroomclipart.com/ - over 36,000 images Find royalty-free clipart - http://creativecommons.org/find/ - don’t have to worry about copyrights here. Search for a sound - http://www.findsounds.com/ - sound effects, musical instruments, and more Search for shareware software - http://www.shareware.com/ - it’s all free or cheap Find a radio station – anywhere in the world - http://www.publicradiofan.com/ - hundreds of stations to choose from. Need a map - http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/ - find maps and more here. Need driving directions and a map - http://www.mapquest.com/ or http://maps.yahoo.com/ - I like the Yahoo site best. Search for a quote - http://www.quotationspage.com/search.php3 - find out who said it. Ask an expert a question - http://www.allexperts.com/index.htm - it’s free! Ask a librarian a question - http://www.247ref.org/portal/access2.cfm?lib=Public - librarians are experts on everything, aren’t they? Search engine for kids - http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/ - safe for kids.
