Tech Tip: Downloading
from the Internet
Ever go to a webpage and think…I want to capture that picture or text to my hard drive. Well, here are some tips on how to download various elements from a web page. Downloading a picture There are 2 ways to save a picture on a web page to your hard drive.
Copy text from a website There are 2 ways to transfer text on a web page to a Word document (or some other word processor).
Create a shortcut to a webpage on your Desktop (Copy a link). There a 2 ways to get a link on your Desktop as a shortcut.
If you use the first method, you won’t include pictures that are on the website when you open the link. If you use the second method, you will include pictures (and all other material) that is on the web page when you open it.
If there is a picture on a webpage that you want to download but the picture is also a link, how do you get that picture? The right-click or the drag and drop methods do not work. Well, this is a little more specialized. You actually have to do some kind of screen capture program to “capture” the picture. You will need a special piece of software used for doing screen captures. The screen capture program I use is called Grabber2K. It can capture part of a screen or it can capture the full screen. Grabber2K is a Freeware program and you can download it here. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Authors/Rad2k_Systems.html
Other types of downloads If there are Word files or Acrobat Reader files (PDF files) that you want to download and save on your hard drive, the key is to right-click on the link and select Save Target. If you left-click on the link, you will open the file right in your Internet Explorer browser window. If you right-click, you can elect to save the file. After you save a file to your Desktop, you are always given the opportunity of opening the file immediately.
