Time Sheets for December 1-15 are due to Barb by noon on Friday, December 17th
2. The Legislative Forum is scheduled for Friday, December 17th from 2:00 to 3:30 at the Lyon County Courthouse in Rooms 1 & 2 on the second floor. We again need your students to attend and speak & also written stories of what ABE and WorkForce has done for them as they strive to improve their lives. As you are aware, we have done this legislative forum in the past, but with so many new legislative folk and the deficit, I believe this year's forum will be most critical. We need folks from the ESL world, the GED world, computer classes, and FastTRAC programs to be speaking on this day - a good variety. I think our key message will be our students' ability to share how due to our services they can be more productive in our workforce. Please let us know by December 10th as to who you will be able to bring to this meeting. Remember they do not need to be current students.............could be past students that can speak well to the difference our services have made in their lives. Pat 3. Christmas Holidays - December 20th through January 4th - Classes will be held at the instructor's discretion. Please let the office know when or if you will be holding classes during this time. The ABE office will be open during this time.Geisler________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABE ESLSubject: SAVE THE DATE: ESL INSTITUTE: May 3-4, 2011 More information click the below linkC:\Users\Emma\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\LDDFJ4BZ\untitled-2 (4).htm ** SAVE THE DATE **Importance: HighAdult ESL Institute - Tues. For the 5 th year, Western Community Action is coordinating Free Tax Preparation Services for low to moderate income individuals and families! We are gearing up and getting excited for another successful season. Last year, volunteers assisted people in receiving refunds totaling nearly $1 million dollars, and we are aiming for that goal again! J Western Community Action asks that you consider volunteering for this time-limited (Just February through mid- April) and FUN opportunity! The following positions are available: Tax preparer: This position involves learning the Tax Wise software used at the clinics in preparing federal and state returns for customers. Don’t worry about a lack of experience as training is required. Training will be held in two parts. You must complete one Part A session, and one Part B session to participate in the program. You must also complete some time in the practice lab until you are comfortable with the software. Part A sessions (you must attend one) are: Thursday, January 6th OR Tuesday January 11th from 5:30pm to 9pm. Part B sessions (you must also attend one of these) are: Tuesday January 18th OR Thursday January 20th from 5:30pm to 9pm. Practice lab sessions will be held at various time during the week of January 24th.Greeter/Screener: This position involves checking customers in to the tax clinic, making them feel welcome, and informing them about our tax site process. The Greeter/Screen position also reviews the taxpayers documents, checks identification, and makes sure that the customer has everything needed to complete the return. Indications are that dealing with the projected $6.2 billion deficit in the next biennium, and focusing on job creation, will be top priorities for all legislators. ABE must make the case that we are essential to Minnesota's future. Fortunately, ABE has never been viewed as a partisan issue. We do know that Sen. Gen Olson (33-Minnestrista) will chair the Senate Education Finance/Education Reform Committee; Rep. Garofalo (36B-Farmington) will chair House Education Finance; and Rep. Sondra Erickson (16A-Princeton) will chair the House Education Reform Committee. It is essential that we develop grassroots relationships with new legislators. Whether your legislator is new or continuing, it is important to develop and maintain positive working relationships. Please call your legislators, introduce yourself, and ask them to visit your program. You may go to the easy to use "district finder" http://www.gis.leg.mn/OpenLayers/districts to learn who your legislators will be this year. Once office phone numbers and emails are available, we will be asking you to contact new legislators in your districts and familiarize them with ABE. If you have a conversation on the phone or in-person, here are some points to make: * Last year, ABE served over 78,000 adult learners, providing over 5,800,000 hours of service.* Adult Basic Education helps learners acquire and improve employability skills, and prepare for higher education, through partnerships with business, MNSCU, and workforce centers.* Adult Basic Education helps parents learn how to support their children in school, improving K12 outcomes.* Adult Basic Education strengthens families and communities statewide by providing family literacy, teaching refugees English skills, and responding to community needs. Please email me once you have made these contacts, and let me know how your conversation goes so I may share the information with our lobbyists. Our lobbyists are always willing to provide assistance and support to you. The information you provide assists them greatly in their work on behalf of ABE.
